Known Limitations

Pre-release renderer

Kanvas is pre-1.0. The current implementation is suitable for active development and integration testing, but broad rendering parity and hardware certification are still in progress.

Compose rendering parity

Not every Skia/Skiko operation used by every Compose Desktop application is fully covered yet.

Use strict mode while extending support

Set strictRenderer = true when you want unsupported primary-frame operations to fail visibly instead of being hidden by compatibility behavior.

Text

Full native text shaping, font fallback, glyph-atlas rendering, exact metrics, and advanced effects remain incomplete.

Images and effects

Some image/effect paths still use compatibility lowering rather than the final persistent GPU-resource path.

Platform verification

Broad GPU/driver testing is still in progress.

  • macOS Metal is the main Apple path.
  • Linux Vulkan currently attaches through X11/XWayland.
  • Windows Vulkan, OpenGL, and Direct3D 9 require broader real-hardware verification.
  • GDI is software/reference only.

ARM64

Apple Silicon is the main ARM64 path today.

ARM64 scope

ARM64 support on Apple Silicon should not be interpreted as a blanket guarantee for every operating system, native toolchain, and GPU backend on ARM64.

Packaging

Test the artifact you ship

Always test generated distributables on the operating system and architecture you intend to ship. A successful development run does not prove the packaged runtime has the same paths, native libraries, or launcher configuration.
